During her speech at the UTC Critical Infrastructure Communications Policy Summit last week, Federal Communications Commissioner (FCC) Mignon Clyburn highlighted the FCC's recent Fourth Report and Order and Fifth Further Notice of Proposed Rulemaking which invites comment on whether critical infrastructure industry (CII) entities, including utility companies, should be eligible to hold 4.9 GHz licenses on a primary basis. Commissioner Clyburn emphasized that "sharing of spectrum and infrastructure provides tremendous opportunities" for national growth. In particular, she recognized that "utilities and public safety and government entities frequently do work together and rely on each other as partners, and noted that these are 'not unnatural interdependencies.'" She added that this push for utilities to share in the 4.9 GHz band, currently used by public safety, is an effort by public officials towards ensuring a robust, reliable network that benefits the communnities across the nation.

UTC encourages members to file comments on this FCC rulemaking and is holding a special webinar on this topic on Wednesday, June 27. For more information, contact the UTC Legal/Regulatory Department.
